AVALON WEEKEND - FILM FESTIVAL AND BALL

May 27, 2013

Picking up where we left off yesterday, after we strolled around a bit, it was time to attend the Catalina Island Museum Silent Film Benefit at the Casino Theatre.  This theater, located in the first floor of the Casino below the ballroom, is gorgeous.  While you can see some of the exterior lovely murals and tilework in my post from last year, today I’ll show you a glimpse of the inside (though I will mention the lovely tile mermaid on the front of the theater is not the original – the original was a mural, but was only later made as tile in 1986.  You learn something new every day.)

Catalina Silent Film Festival Laurel Hardy

The festival featured four comedy shorts – Never Weaken with Harold Lloyd, The Goat with Buster Keaton, Big Business with Laurel and Hardy and The Immigrant with Charlie Chaplin.  All of the films were accompanied by the Page Theatre Pipe Organ.  The inside of the theater is lovely, depicting in murals images that remind you of California’s early history.  Built as the first movie theater specifically wired for sound, the interior has lush seats that even have the original wire racks for your hats.  As we watched the films, you can look up at the ceiling and see electric stars twinkling down at you.  It is truly a magical space.

After the festival, we walked around the Casino some more and I had to pose for a photo with one of my charms on my charm bracelet, depicting the Casino.  At first glance it is the Casino, but with a press of a button, the top pops open and inside is a dancing couple in the ballroom (sorry the photo can’t show you the detail – you’ll just have to trust me.)

It was at long last time for the ball.  I was very original and wore my dress from last year.  It is so pretty, it needed another whirl.  I didn't get a lot of interior shots, but there were a few posed outside.

There you have it.  I actually cut it down to two posts instead of three, so I spared you dragging this out more.  Did you attend the ball?  How did you like it?

'Bye for Now,

I know this is an old post but Im really happy to have found your blog through Tea With The Vintage BAroness. I love the 1920s and 30s myself and am just starting out in vintage blogging and dressing in more vintage clothes. I turned 35 recently and figured Im old enough to dress exactly how I like. You look gorgeous in all your pictures and I love the navy blue of your dress in particular
